Design Technology at Fagley Primary School
Intent
At Fagley Primary School, our intent for Design and Technology is to provide a high-quality education that inspires creativity, develops technical skills, and fosters a passion for innovation. Through our Design and Technology curriculum, we aim to engage and challenge our pupils, ensuring they develop curiosity, problem-solving abilities, and resilience. We want to equip our pupils with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in a technological world.
Implementation
Our Design and Technology curriculum is structured to ensure a balance between knowledge and skills acquisition, while also providing opportunities for creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking. It follows the aims of the National Curriculum, incorporating key concepts, processes, and objectives appropriate for each age group.
Teachers use a range of teaching strategies, such as practical demonstrations, group work and project based learning, to ensure active participation and understanding. They provide clear explanations and scaffold pupils’ learning, while also encouraging independent thinking and problem solving skills.
Inclusion is a priority within our Design and Technology provision. We strive to create a nurturing and inclusive environment where every pupil can thrive and feel valued. Adaptive teaching strategies, resources, and support are provided to ensure all learners can access the curriculum and make progress. Pupils with special educational needs or disabilities receive additional assistance and adaptations to enable their full participation and achievement.
Impact
Our Design and Technology provision has a significant impact on the educational outcomes and personal development of our pupils. At Fagley Primary School pupils are given timely feedback and targets for improvement. This gives the pupils opportunities to refine their skills, deepen their understanding, and demonstrate competency in key areas of the subject. Our curriculum fosters a love for creativity and innovation. Pupils are encouraged to explore, take risks, and think critically. They become confident and innovative creators, able to apply their skills and knowledge in real-world contexts.
Through our curriculum we want to equip our pupils with essential skills for the future. They develop a range of technical and practical capabilities, including designing, making, evaluating, and refining products. Pupils also acquire transferrable skills such as communication, collaboration, and resilience, making them well-prepared for future studies and the workplace. We instill a strong awareness of safety and sustainability in our pupils' design and making processes. They learn about the potential risks associated with materials and tools, as well as the importance of responsible consumption and environmental considerations. Pupils develop into responsible citizens who understand the impact of design and technology on society, both in the present and for future generations.
