Intention Statement

Fagley Primary School believes that the learning of foreign languages provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for pupils. During languages lessons, we strive for our children to be confident understanding, communicating ideas their ideas whether this be verbally or in writing.

This enables the pupils to develop their communication and literacy skills that lay the foundation for future language learning
Throughout or explicit teaching we focus on the children being able to:
• listen attentively to spoken language and show understanding by joining in and responding
• explore the patterns and sounds of language through songs and rhymes and link the spelling, sound and meaning of words
• engage in conversations; ask and answer questions; express opinions and respond to those of others; seeking clarification and help
• speak in sentences, using familiar vocabulary, phrases and basic language structures
• read carefully and show understanding of words, phrases and simple writing
• appreciate stories, songs, poems and rhymes in the language
• broaden their vocabulary and develop their ability to understand new words that are introduced into familiar written material, including through using a dictionary
• write phrases from memory, and adapt these to create new sentences, to express ideas clearly
• describe people, places, things and actions orally and in writing
• understand basic grammar appropriate to the language being studied

The main languages curriculum begins in Year 3, however, we do introduce French through KS1 so the children are familiar with simple words and concepts from a young age. We integrate this into our teaching of other areas of the curriculum and have written language in the environment for children to make links with.
