Reading Events

Breakfast and Books

Fagley Primary was thrilled to welcome parents at our Breakfast and Books event. The hall was completely full of enthusiastic readers! It was fantastic to see parents and children sharing stories together; chatting about books and reflecting on their own reading habits. Reading is wonderful for our mental health and emotional wellbeing; it not only exercises the brain, it can provide an escape from the real work as well as helping us to have a good night’s sleep.

Tiny Tales and Tunes

Preschool through to Class 2 enjoyed a visit from Tiny Tales and Tunes, bringing stories to life. Children listened and joined in with lots of fun activities based on books. They explored different movements through the different stages of the books, using instruments to create sounds to match the storylines. Children loved interacting with their favourite stories.

Theatre Production

The whole school enjoyed a wonderful production of ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’. We joined Dorothy as she embarked on a magical voyage of dreary Kansas to the land of Oz. Along the way, she made friends with an assortment of colourful characters and did battle with the Wicked Witch of the West. Children loved watching the Hobgoblin Theatre production and interacting with the story.

Sharing Stories Together

Children enjoy pupil-led story reading in the school yurt at break times. What a wonderful way to spread a love of reading!

World Book Day

Children discussed their reading preferences and chose a book and author to celebrate for World Book Day. They used fabric pens to decorate hats in the style of their books to showcase their favourite author. Children enjoyed wearing their hats in school and comparing the books chosen.

World Book Performances

The Reading Committee performed a short snippet from Charlotte’s Web to introduce children to a classic story. Teachers delivered performances of popular stories including the classics. Stories included Romeo and Juliet,  Handa’s Surprise, We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, The Day the Crayons Quit and many more!

Reading Committee Shopping for Books

Members of the reading committee enjoyed a trip to a local supermarket to select their own books using World Book Day tokens. They enjoyed seeing which books were available and choosing copies to bring back to school and share in assembly. They shared these in the parent ‘Breakfast and Books event’, hoping this would encourage children and parents to go to a shop and use a token to pick up a book of their own!

Guess the Author

We aim for children to be exposed to an extensive diet of authors so that they can develop more choice and agency in their reading habits. We want children to choose to pick up a book and to know which authors they enjoy and want to hear more from. Authors are regularly included in whole school assemblies and classes have recently begun to take part in ‘Guess the Author’ quizzes in order for them to be able to recall authors and books they have enjoyed.
